Dr Nick Johnson

Hello!
I am one a Principal Architect working at EPCC, University of Edinburgh.
I am primarily responsible for the Data Science Cloud, our OpenStack-based on-demand Virtual Machine offering, and the Cerebras CS-3 Wafer-Scale cluster service as part of EIDF. I work with a number of colleagues in Prof. Jano van Hemert’s team to support and develop those services.
Prior to this I worked on a number of High-Performance Computing (HPC) research projects led by Prof. Michèle Weiland at EPCC, mostly notable the EU FP7 funded Adept and EU Horizon 2020 funded ExaFLOW projects.
I am also chair of EPCC’s Computing Committee (EP4C) where I am effectively (by delegation) responsbile for IT policy within EPCC. I was formerly (until August 2025) the EPCC delegate to UoE’s Information Technology Committee (ITC). I convene the College Information Security Group, and represent EPCC on other College bodies within the University.
Prior to this, and after completing my PhD with Prof. Steve McLaughlin and Prof. John Thompson at the Insitute for Digital Communications, now the Institute for Imaging, Data and Communications, I worked for a short period at Agilent Labs (Scotland) in South Queensferry and at The Gyle on advanced networking and anomoly detection.
